Oil Spill In Gulf of Mexico

May 26, 2010

On April 20th there was a huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  This is affecting may people, killed many birds and fish, restaurants, fisherman, business men, etc.  To try to stop this leak they have been pouring mud t overpower the oil.  The past sixteen days the government has tried many efforts into stopping this horrible leak.  However, it is powerful so many ways have not worked.  President Obama is heading to Louisiana to help with what is going on.

Some believe that the BP are not working there best at trying to stop this, so there has been much controversy about what is actually going on.  This spill has killed many wildlife, and destroyed so much of our nature.  It is sad to see that many people do not even know what is going on in their own Country.  Hopefully, they will stop the spill permanently so not more wildlife will die, and no more nature will be destroyed.

Shame on Arizona

May 6, 2010

This new Law passed in Arizona trying to “cut down” on immigration is going against what America stands for.  Police now have the right to discriminate and choose who they believe is here illegally.  This law is just going to cause harrasment and discrimination against all Hispanics in Arizona.  The government states that police will have proper training to carry out the law, however, we all know police use there power in wrong ways many times.

This new law is being protested throughout many states because it is not morally right, and is setting up for ethnic and racial profiling.  If Arizona wants to cut down on illegal immigrants then a smarter and more sufficiant plan needs to be thought of.  The new law they have thought of causes way to much discrimination of Hispanics.

“Trust Your Training”

March 26, 2010

On Sunday March 21st I witnessed 25,000 women, men, and children from all over the world run this amazing marathon that started at Dodgers stadium, and ended at our very own Santa Monica Pier.  My mother works for Multiple Sclorosis, so I helped her set up a booth, and cheer on the various runners at the harsh 23rd mile.  As i witnessed the extremely fit Kenya first place runners, ages anywhere from 10 to 80, and people literally doing the whole marathon on a wheelchair with there arms, I felt a rush of togetherness that the community conveyed.  From the Santa Monica Mirror, one of the runners wrote,

“I really got to take in everything I saw in the race today,” said Wesley Korir, winner of the men’s race. “Hollywood was crowded, but Beverly Hills was breezy and nice. Everything was just amazing.”

Seeing everyone get together to create such a great marathon really meant a lot to many people around the community.  Not to mention Santa Monica got a lot of visitors staying in the various hotels on Ocean Avenue.  All in all having the LA Marathon run through Santa Monica was a memorable experience for anyone who witnessed it.

SMMUSD

March 19, 2010

The SMMUSD school district is trying to not allow people who live in LAUSD school districts to come into Santa Monica and Malibu public schools.  This is causing a lot of controversy because many children that live in LA areas want to obtain a better education then the ones they would get in there local schools.  There are nearly 1200 students that are on a permit that attend SMMUSD schools.  Which means most students will be kicked out of the district unless they fit the certain criteria that the district is setting.

Letting other kids from other areas creates a good diversity in local schools.  It also allows for students to choose a better education then LA school districts offer.  One major aspect that I loved about attending Santa Monica High is the wide range of diversity that the school population had.  This really represented how society is, and what real life is after high school, and college.  This new permit exemption should be looked over again, because just cutting everyone that lives out of the district is just calling for trouble.

Wedding of “Dreams”

March 12, 2010

One of the Seasons “The Bachelor” couple got married on television last week over looking the Pacific Ocean in Southern California.  This was aired as a two hour special on ABC.  The ceremony was quite large, which included many past season Bachelor contestants.  I personally had no interest in watching this pathetic form of entertainment, however, as the article describes, “which ended with white doves being released into raining skies.”(realityworld.com) I am sure your mind can imagine how the ceremony previous to the release of doves was set up.

It confuses me as to why America likes watching people they have never met a day in there lives get married on television, at this “stereotypical” type of wedding.  This kind of entertainment is only making women believe that there wedding has to live up to this one.  People are going to want how it was set up, the scenery with the ocean in the background, doves flying, etc.  Our television and choice of shows has become to narrow minded, because they are allowing this type of entertainment to air on television.  It might not seem like it, but this type of media really does influence minds of women out there sitting on their couch watching this so called “gorgeous” and “fantasy” wedding.  Entertainment needs to higher their standards, because we the people who are watching television are just becoming robot minded, letting ourselves watch this pathetic form entertainment.

A Never Ending Cycle

March 5, 2010

“O.J. Simpson, Dennis Rodman and RuPaul: They aren’t considered role models by most African Americans, but they were celebrated by students at a South L.A. elementary school for Black History Month. ” – LA News

During black history month, Wadsworth Elementary School, in Los Angeles found three white teachers who gave the children three options of OJ Simpson, Dennis Rodman, and Rupaul to write about.  These teachers were intentionally trying to mock black history month by choosing these negative figures for the kids.  This outraged the community of Wadsworth, because they felt like the schoolteachers were putting African Americans down, and not taking black history month seriously.

This just shows that racism is still in our faces, and everyone will witness some sort of racism one way or another throughout a lifetime.  Educators especially should not be teaching, because teachers are what influence many children’s lives.  If these teachers are promoting negative figures, then some kids will look up to these figures and some might even start to act like them.  Teachers like this need to be expelled of there license, so our future generations will not have this type of negativity in there heads of African American people.

Unwrapped

February 26, 2010

As I was watching Unwrapped-movie theatre treats, my mouth watered as they showed rainbow twizzlers, dip-in dots, pretzels, popcorn, funnel cake, and white castle hamburgers.  For every item they explicitly showed how the food was made, processed, and wrapped up in the factory.  All of these foods have come out with different flavors, and various varieties for each item to appeal to more consumers.

They did a study on sweet sugary cinnamon pretzels vs. regular salt pretzels, and discovered that people in the East coast prefer plain salty pretzels rather than the people on the West coast prefer the sugary cinnamon pretzels.  I thought this show was very interesting because these companies really try their best in appealing to the consumers with different colors, flavors, characters, etc.  We are now in the generation that movie theatres have a lot more food options then just butter popcorn, so various companies have to compete to win the spot in a movie theatre.
